  • A breakthrough in EV segment: India's first battery swapping station for EVs is here:
    • Sun Mobility has launched modular batteries and quick interchange stations connected via a smart network for swapping of batteries for two and 3-wheeler electric vehicles in Bangalore.
    • The modular smart batteries can be used on different vehicle types which automatically customize their output depending on the vehicle's energy requirement and multiple batteries can be paired together for high performance applications and longer range.
    • Swapping out the modular batteries at a Quick Interchange Station takes only a few minutes.
    • The smart network monitors battery and station status and provides real-time feedback to customers and fleet owners through a mobile app.

    Micromax plans to enter E-vehicles manufacturing:
    • Micromax is already supplying batteries to electric two and three wheelers.
    • The company plans to enter into manufacturing of electric two and three wheelers soon.
    Emflux, a high-end electric bike manufacturer in India raises Rs. 2 Crore:
    • Emflux plans to launch their performance bikes soon with focus on building a brand name and partnering with OEMs for technology and component suppliers.
    • The price of their electric performance bikes is estimated to be around Rs. 5 Lakh.
    Now Uttarakhand receives 20 electric cars from EESL:
    • EESL will charge Rs. 38000 including Driver's cost from State Govt. as rent.

    After Ola, Meru also to add e-vehicles to its fleet:

    Exicom wins EESL's order to supply 2,000 electric vehicle chargers with:

    Another good move by Govt. - minors within age bracket of 16-18 may be allowed to ride e-scooters:
    • Currently teenagers from 16 to 18 years of age are allowed to carry a licence and ride scooters with displacement 50cc or less, however, no scooter exists in India in this range.
    • To make mobility easy for this age group and to promote electric vehicles, the Govt. may allow such youth to ride e-scooters/bikes.
    Made in India Lithium Ion Charger launched by Ampere Vehicles, Coimbatore:
    • The Chargers are designed with two-stage charging profile in which charging voltage and the current's levels can be amended based on the requirements of battery manufacturers' recommendations.

    • The company also plans to build solar powered battery infrastructure.
    Kolkata to add new 80 e-buses by June:
    • 30 battery chargers including 10 fast or turbo battery chargers will be placed along the routes for emergency.

    Gurugram (Haryana) to add 400 Electric buses to its fleet by mid 2019:
    • Board of Directors of Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) is planning to float tender for supply of 100 E-buses soon.
    • Plans to add 300 more by mid 2019, taking the number of e-buses to 400.
    Smart, conductor-less, e-buses launched in Kolkata's New Town:
    • Housing Infrastructure Development Corp. (Hidco) and Coal India have jointly procured the 32-seater electric buses for internal transport in New Town.
    • The charging station will be located in a workshop behind Pride Hotel, near Eco Urban Village and Shaporji Palonji bus terminus.
    • Passengers will have to punch a smart ticketing system to get a printed receipt or ticket.
    Lithium Urban Technologies (Lithium) raises $8 Million (approx. Rs. 50 Crores) for expansion:
    • Lithium has raised the funds from International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank’s investment arm.
    • Lithium provides transport through electric cars only to the corporate sector in Bengaluru and Delhi region.
    Gurugram (Gurgaon) Govt. Officials to join the list of EV users:
    • Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will soon procure 25 Electric cars.
    • The cars will be procured through EESL Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
    • The office of GMDA at Institutional Area Sector 32 has been identified for building charging point while a charging point has already been built in MCG office located in Sector 34, Gurugram.
    Strom Motors unveil a stylish Electric Car:
    • The Car with three wheels (so a trike) can run 80 KM in single charge.
    • The charging time is 3-6 Hours.
    • The running cost is only Rs. 0.40 /KM.
    Eicher to start Electric Buses in Kolkata by May 2018:
    • Buses will be introduced in the areas not connected by buses - two buses for Action Area I and one bus for Action Area II.
    • 32 seater bus built by Eicher will have an average speed of 40-50 KMPH. The fare of the buses will be Rs. 10.
    • There will be no conductors. The drivers will collect the fare and a machine will be installed to generate the tickets.
    Big Move - Government removes licensing restriction on setting up of EV Charging Stations:
    • Setting up charging stations for electric vehicles does not need a separate license under the Electricity Act of 2003.
    • The charging of battery essentially involves utilization of electrical energy for its conversion to chemical energy, which gets stored in the battery. This mechanism doesn't imply trade, transmission or distribution of electricity.
    • Now, any company be it private or govt., even small and medium enterprises can set-up charging infrastructure without worrying about licenses.

    EESL to procure 20000 Electric Vehicles by 2019:
    • This will save around 50 Million Litres of fuel every year.
    • EESL will be investing around Rs. 2400 Cr. to provide efficient transport solutions.
    ISRO extends help to EV industry and it matters a lot:
    • ISRO has announced that it is ready to transfer lithium-ion batteries technology to private industry to use in EVs.
    • Government level discussions are going on to find suitable industrial partners and manufacture commercial grade li-ion batteries.
    • This move shall take the credibility and reliability of the lithium ion batteies in India to a higher notch.
    Zoomcar planning to add 2500 electric vehicles in 25 cities by 2019:
    • Zoomcar is present in Mysuru, Bengaluru and Hyderababd with 55 car and plans to enter Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
    • Zoomcar plans to have 50% of its car as Electric as the operational cost of running electric cars is much less than CND/diesel or petrol cars.
    FAME Scheme extended:
    • Second phase of the FAME scheme which was to be finalized by 31st March 2018 has been delayed by six months hence the ongoing first phase is extended.
    • EV industry experts do not expect much changes form the ongoing FAME policy rather they expect more incentives in the new policy/phase II.

    Argentina has invited Indian firms to procure Lithium from them:
    • Argentina has over 3,31,000 tonnes of lithium reserves.
    • Companies like Toyota, Aberdeen International and China's Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium Co. have already formed consortiums to for lithium mining in Australia.
    Electric bicycle at Rs. 10 per hour:
    • India's first electric bicycle (e-bike) App Mobycy has been launched in Gurgaon.
    • These e-bikes are powered by lithium ion battery having a 250-watt motor.
    • The e-bikes can travel up to 40 KM on a full charge with a top speed of 20 km/hr.
    Power Ministry asks all central govt. departments and PSUs to switch to electric vehicles:
    • All ministries/departments of Government of India and their attached/subordinate offices/PSUs located in the NCR to communicate their requirement of EVs to EESL.
    • The requirement shall only be limited to running of cars within NCR region.
    Now New Delhi civic bodies also trying out electric cars:
    • South Delhi Municipal Corporation has bought 32 electric cars and will set up 30 charging stations in the city.

    Bangalore to get 11 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations:
    • First charging stations will be set up by Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) at its office at K.R. Circle.
    • Bescom has proposed a "Time of Day tariff" system in which motorists will be charged Rs.4.5 per unit during day and 4 at night.
    Mumbai's roads will now see 6 Electric Buses with supply of two new electric buses:
    • With already having four electric buses running in South Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) added two more electric buses to its fleet.
    • The buses have carrying capacity of 31 passengers and can cover 200 KM in a single charge. Charging points have been set up at Backbey depot.
    • The buses will be provided by Goldstone Infratech (JV between Goldstone group of Hyderabad and BYD of China).
    Andhra Pradesh to take number of EVs to 1 Lakh in the state in next five years:
    • EESL has agreed to invest over Rs. 10,000 Crores in next five years in Andhra Pradesh state.
    • A.P would achieve monetary savings of Rs 2,160 Cr. through this step.
    Telangana State Road Transport Corporation to add 40 electric buses:
    • The bus model BYD K9 B.2 costing Rs. 2.4 Cr. each will be supplied by Chinese EV maker BYD.
    • The bus will have following features.
      • Capacity of 25 passengers each bus
      • Will travel 250 KM in one full charge
      • Will take 4 Hours to charge fully
    • These e-buses will plying on Telangana roads in 3 months i.e. from June 2018.
    Mahindra and LG Chem to jointly develop new and advanced lithium-ion battery technology:
    • The venture will develop a unique cell exclusively for use in India.
  • Railways will provide space for electric vehicle charging stations in parking lots:
    • New Delhi and Nizamuddin Railway stations have been identified as locations.
    • 5 fast charging DC points to charge 10 cars at the same time.
    • Each charging point will cost around Rs. 3 Lakhs.
    • The charging points will be set up by BSES - Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) and the power tariffs will be as per Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) tariffs.
    Karnataka becoming the hub for EV developments in India:
    • Amperia Lithium Battery Manufacturing to invest Rs. 1200 Cr. at Chikaballapur in Karnataka to set up battery manufacturing plant.
    • Mahindra Electric Mobility to invest R.s 145 Cr. to set up EV R & D facility in Devanahalli and Rs. 400 Cr. in existing electric car manufacturing plant in Karnataka.
    • Goldstone Infratech (JV between Goldstone group of Hyderabad and BYD of China) to invest Rs. 500 Cr. in setting up electric bus manufacturing facility in Karnataka.
    Exicom Tele-Systems Ltd. will be supplying 125 electric vehicle chargers to EESL:
    • To be used for charging Tata Tigor and Mahindra E-Verito to be supplied to EESL.
    • To be installed- 100 AC slow charging stations with a capacity of 3.3 kilowatt and 25 fast charging stations with a capacity of 15 kilowatt.

    Fast EV charger installed in NITI Aayog, New Delhi:
    • The installed 50 KW ABB Terra 53 charger can charge an electric car in 30 minutes.
    • This is part of NITI Aayog pilot project to set up 135 EV charging stations in Delhi NCR.
    Chinese electric bus maker BYD is planning to set up manufacturing facility in India in Karnataka:
    • Will be spread in 100 acres at Bidar (Karnataka), with initial capacity of around 1000 units a year.
    • Localization of product will be around 25% initially and will be increased to 50% by 2020.
    • BYD also has plans to manufacture batteries in India.
    • BYD plans to provide electric buses to cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jammu, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore and Bengaluru.
    ARAI and ISRO have jointly developed a prototype two wheeler using ISRO's Li-ion battery:
    • The battery used in the prototype scooter was earlier used in space for surface transport vehicles.
    • The 48 Volt, 50 Ampere-hour battery can give a range of 90 KM and the top speed is expected around 45 Kmph.
    Mahindra and Mahindra has developed a scalable modular platform for EVs:
    • Termed as MESMA- Mahindra Electric Scalable Modular Platform will serve as basic building block to develop upcoming range of EVs from Mahindra.

    Mahindra and Mahindra has won an order to supply 1000 EVs in Bengaluru:
    • Baghirathi Travel Solutions, a transport fleet operator, has given order to M&M to supply 1000 Electric Cars.
    • M&M will supply e-Verito with up to 140 KM which is 30% higher than 110 KM range expected from the e-verito being supplied to EESL in New Delhi.
    • Baghirathi Travel Solutions to brand its EVs as "RydS" and plans to replace its entire fleet with EVs in the next 3-5 years.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra to invest Rs. 600 Crores on Electric Vehicles:
    • Will manufacture 3000 Electric Cars per month for next two years from current average of 200 cars per month.
    • Mahindra currently manufactures electric cars at its Bengaluru, Nasik and Pune facilities.
    Now Goa joins the Electric Buses race:
    • Goldstone Infratech delivered one electric bus to Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) of Goa on trial basis.
    • The delivered bus is Goldstone's ebuzz K9 variant of 12 Meter length.
    • The bus will carry around 39 passengers and cover distance of 250 KM at speed to 70 kmph in one charge.
    Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) working to build EV testing facility:
    • To test all EVs ranging from two wheelers to commercial vehicles to buses.
    • The Association is already working on battery testing facility in Chakan, Pune.
    Bangalore to become largest Electric Bus Fleet user soon:
    • Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has planned 150 Electric Buses for passenger movement.
    • BMTC will lease the electric buses instead of purchasing them as the cost involved is Rs. 2-3 Crore per bus.
    IIT Madras Research Park has developed prototype of a swappable battery:
    • Developed at Centre for Battery Engineering and Electric Vehicles (CBEEV) of IITM.
    • The battery can be externally charged at home or swapping stations and attached to EV.
    • Swapping stations can be set up at petrol pumps/CNG stations.
    • These batteries are expected to be in the market by the end of 2018.
    Kerala State Electricity Board plans EVs and charging stations in Kerala:
    • KSEBL will rent out the EVs (Mahindra e2o model) to those interested in having a no-emission drive.
    • Two Charging stations planned in Thiruvananthapuram and one each in Ernakulam and Kozhikode.
    • Power for these stations to be generated from 30 kw solar panels.
    • Each station is estimated to cost Rs 30.5 Lakh because of the solar panel.
    EESL has invited bid for 2,000 electric vehicle chargers:
    • The bid is for setting up of 2,000 electric vehicle chargers.
    • The charging stations will cater to second phase of the EV program to roll-out 9,500 electric vehicles .

    • Under the FAME scheme:
      • Subsidy is provided to an extent of 60 per cent of purchase cost for electric buses.
      • Rs 1.24 lakh for every Electric four wheeler.
      • Rs 61,000 for every electric three wheeler.
    Hriman Motors of Noida working on a two-seater electric car "RT90" with a battery for lifetime:
    • The battery built with Lithium Titanium Oxide technology can run for over 15000 cycles.
    • Single charge cycle gives a range of 200 KM making the car run for over 30 Lakh KM. (15000*200).
    • Two buying options:
      • Buy it and drive it at 50 paise per KMor.
      • Paying just 6 to 8 Rs. per KM under total cost of ownership model.
    • The car is undergoing road trials and expects to see the car by mid of 2018.

    Amara Raja Batteries (owner of Amaron battery brand) has commissioned two-wheeler battery plant:
    • Plans to invest Rs700 crore in the new battery plant in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.
    • In first phase, the plant will have a capacity of 5 million units, theneventually will be scaled up to 17 million units.
    • This will take the total capacity of Amara Raja batteries for two-wheeler to 29 million units.
    Magnum Pirex, a German EV startup, planning to set up a manufacturing base in Andhra Pradesh:
    • At an investment of around $15.5 Million (INR 100 Cr).
    • With proposal to supply battery-powered sports cars, family cars and small trucks below the INR 10 Lakh.
    • Producing 12,000-15,000 electric cars per annum.
    Smart EV charger launched at SCOPE complex, New Delhi:
    • Installed by Fortum India, a wholly owned subsidiary of clean energy company FortumOyj from Finland.
    • The charger will identify authorized users using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology.
    • The smart cards need to be flashed at a specific point on the charger before recharging the vehicles Necessary power cost will be deducted from the balance in the smart card.
    Karnataka Govt. approves "Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2017" with an aim to develop Bengaluru as the EV capital of India. Following are highlights:
    • Investments worth Rs. 31,000 Crore will be made.
    • Around 55,000 employment opportunities will be generated.
    • Subsidies will be given for charging infrastructure in all public and private properties.
    • Exemptionfrom taxes under KMVT (Karnataka Motor Vehicle Taxation) Act 1957 will be given to EVs.
    • Karnataka Electric Mobility Research and Innovation Centre will be setup.
    • Start-ups will be encouraged to develop business model for EVs.
    Delhi Govt. to buy 600 electric buses out of green tax fund (collected as Environment Compensation Charge (ECC):
    • Rs. 400 crore collected as the 'green tax' will be used for buying around 500 electric buses.
    • An additional Rs. 15 crore of the funds will be used to create a charging infrastructure for these buses.
    • DTC has also urged the centre to make the project part of the FAME India scheme.
    Bhubaneshwar submits a proposal to Centre worth Rs. 220 Crore to achieve 30% Electrification of transport by 2030:

    • NITI Aayog along with Rocky Mountain Institutehas invited Indian states to be part of this Urban Mobility Lab (UML).
    • UML program will help the teams in generating solutions to complex mobility problems and test their solutions as pilots in the Lighthouse City.

    • This is a quick pilot project to plan for future rollout of EV charging infrastructure.
    • Proposed for rollout in the Gurgaon-IGI-South Delhi-Noida corridor.
    • Includes 55 locations with 135 charging stations - 46 are DC quick charging and 89 slow AC charging stations.
    "Flow", a new Electric Scooter to be launched in Auto Expo 2018:
    • The company, Twenty Two Motors, will launch the electric scooter "Flow" during Auto Expo 2018.
    • Initial launch will be in the Delhi NCR with further expansion to Bangalore and Pune.
    • Unique selling point is - battery of the scooter can be removed and can be charged from 5 Ampere home sockets.
    • The scooter goes up to 80 KM on a single charge.
    E-Rickshaws to be powered by solar power in Jabalpur:
    • Around 400 licensed e-rickshaws shall be using the solar powered charging stations for charging.
    • Aim is to convert 5,000 diesel-run city rickshaws into clean mode of transport.
    • The charging stations generate 50 kw of electricity and take 7 - 8 hrs for a full charge to travel 100 to 150 KMABB is the technology provider of solar powered chargers under this initiative of Jabalpur Smart City Corporation.

    • The buses have been supplied by Goldstone Infratech, a JV between Goldstone Group and China's BYD.
    • Each e-bus costs around Rs. 1.61 Crore.
    • Bus will take at least three hours to charge fully and cover 200 km in one full charge at a speed of 70 kmph.

    Octillion Power Systems of US to set up an advanced Electric Vehicle battery manufacturing facility in India:
    • The manufacturing facility will have production capacity of 250 Megawatt Hour.
    • The plant will require investment of $15 Million (approx.. 100 Crores).
    • Will be based in Pune, Maharashtra and is expected to add 500 new jobs in the next 3 years.
    Mahindra Electric (electric vehicle arm of the Mahindra Group) to expand manufacturing capacity of electric cars to 60,000 per annum in 18 months:
    • Existing plant in Bangalore produces the e2O and e20 Plus with capacity of 500 units per month.
    • Plans to expand capacity up to 60000 units per annum in next 18 months.
    • Mahindra & Mahindra (M & M) shall be supplying electric cars under EESL tender.
    • M & M looking to procure local components for manufacturing of electric vehicles.
    A start-up in the EV space, EVI Technologies, is launching electric vehicle chargers soon:
    • EVI Technologies was incubated at the government-funded Electropreneur Park in Delhi.
    • Will set up 5,000 charging stations over the next 3-5 years.
    • In talks with the Delhi Municipal Corporation and a private players to install E charges in Delhi.
    • Sold marketing rights to trade partners in Delhi, UP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Bihar.
    • This charger with a cost of Rs. 5.5 Lakh will take:
      • 80 minutes to fully charge an e-rickshaw.
      • 60 minutes to charge an electric car.

    EESL Tender: A tender for procurement of Electric cars was floated by Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. in August 2017 as a big step towards encouragement of EV usage in India. A snapshot of the result:

    To charge the first batch of 500 ElectricCars, EESL has also floated a tender to supply 2000 slow EV charging station and 50 fast charging stations. EVinfo shall be posting more on EESL's moves on EVs.
